They analyze memories, emotions, perceptions, thoughts, and reasoning processes, as well as the body’s functioning and what maintains these. In addition, each field of psychology strives to improve lives. Understanding behavior and mental processes aids in the diagnosis and treatment of mental illnesses (Feldman, 2009, p.5). There is a vast array of recognized mental illnesses. With children it involves physical or sexual abuse. In addition, some traumatic events personally viewed are the serious physical injury or violent death of another person, whether caused by war, disaster, accident, or physical assault; or the unexpected sight of a body part or a deceased person. Further, some of the traumatic events a person hears or reads about are a sudden or violent death, a severe injury, or the physical attack of a relative or someone close (APA, 2000, pp.463-464). Furthermore, there are a number of features involved with PTSD. These may appear within three months of the traumatic event, or months to years later, and may last a short time, or very long time. On the other hand, they may go away only to return when a person becomes distressed or suffers another traumatic experience. Re-experiencing the traumatic event can come in many forms. The most common forms are having continuous, vivid mental pictures of the traumatic event, or continual upsetting dreams concerning the traumatic event. Occasionally a person may become disassociated momentarily or possibly for several days. All these events are referred to as â€Å"flashbacks†. The question of whether humans are responsible for their actions or if they are under the influence of divine or supernatural power is one that has been debated over for centuries. There are three views that exist: the first is that there is only free will, the second view is that there is only fate, and the third view is that there is room and justification for both possibilities. The themes of fate and free will are very prominent in the book of Genesis and Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex. In both, the fate of the characters is decided by a higher being, but the way in which they arrive at their destinies is determined by free will and the choices they make, which leads to the demise of the characters. The book of Genesis records the creation of the world and everything in it, as well the early relationship between God and humanity. God creates man, Adam, â€Å"from the dust of the ground† (Genesis 2:7) and places him in a paradise on Earth called the garden of Eden, where he also places the tree of knowledge of good and evil. From the man, God creates a woman and tells them that they â€Å"may freely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of knowledge of good and evil [they] shall not eat, for in the day that [they] eat of it [they] shall die (Genesis 2:16). My teacher Ms. Williams announced to the class that we were having a new student join room 411. Everyone was excited, but I wasn’t because it was going to be another student that didn’t like me. Ms. Williams went outside and said â€Å"Class meet Jerome† Everyone started whispering: â€Å"where is he going to sit†? â€Å"What if I don’t like him†? The Lottery And The Cathedral Analysis Essay The outside, west fa?ade of St. Johns Cathedral is extravagantly decorated. From the large sculptures, right down to the sets of doors, the detail of the work is majestic. You feel that you are an insignificant person while admiring all of the years of hard work that was put in to build this cathedral. Many of the outer sculptures around the main sets of doors are more contemporary. One sculpture shows a bus falling off a bridge and another shows a birth of a child. Another contemporary issue that wouldnt be seen on cathedrals such as Notre Dame is the depiction of pilgrims and Indians sharing food above the main entrance. All this works leads you to believe that the inside will just be as lavish as the outside. The outside fa?ade puts you into a mentality that what you are about to enter is going to be of great mass. I was surprised by the coldness of the inside. As I entered I didnt see the intricate detail that encrusted the outside of the cathedral. I peered down the long corrido r lined by columns the size of redwood forest trees, to see the altar many, many yards in front of me.I looked up to see the cross-ribbed vaults connecting to the columns. I feel that the outside of the building tricked me into believing that the inside would be as beautiful. The only part of the inside that was beautifully done with great detail was the stained glass that adorned the walls. The large round stained glass window on the west wall, seen from the interior grabbed my attention from the very beginning. The six-foot figure of Jesus Christ in the center looks small compared to the size of the entire window. As you pass all of the grand pillars you come to an opening where the old architecture melds with the new. The rough uncut stone flows into the softer cut stone as if the building was rebuilt into the old building.
